Developmental Stages

Today, my daughter gave me this beautiful flower. She is very proud of it that she wants me to take a picture of her posing with her new discovery. I remember when she was little, the only thing that she can do is to stare at me and to eat and to cry. Now, she can pick flowers and appreciate the beautiful things around her. How time really flies.

I remember when I was in college, our professor would lecture us on the different stages of development. I was clueless then. Now, I have children of my own, I appreciate more my professor's lecture on child developmental stages. Children development is actually a process which involves learning and mastering skills like turning from supine to prone position, standing without help, walking, climbing up and down the stairs and many more. These skills are known as developmental milestones. Based on research, children develop skills in 5 areas of development.

Cognitive Development
In science, the term cognitive refers to mental processes. Cognitive development refers to the ability of the child to learn and solve problems. Example of this is a five-year-old learning to solve basic math problems.

Social and Emotional Development
This is the ability of the child to interact with other people. Examples of this stage include a six week old smiling at the face of her significant other and a ten month old baby learning to wave goodbye to his dad.

Speech and Language Development
This is the ability to understand and to use the language accordingly.

Fine Motor Skill Development
When discussing this type of development, always associate it with something small. It is the child's ability to use small muscles like using the little fingers to pick up small objects.

Gross Motor Skill Development
On the other hand, this type of motor skill is associated with the larger muscle group. This is the child's ability to use large muscles. Example of this type of development is a child learning to skip rope.

Whenever I see my kids learning new things, I get thrilled and excited. Who knows, they may develop faster than I could ever imagine.

Brief Background About Me...

Me And My Family

I am a wife and a mother of two. I decided to work at home (be a full time mom and at the same time work as SEO specialist) because I want to see my kids grow and also have a career that I can be proud of.  I want to see my kids as they utter their first words. When they are experiencing new things, I want to be at that moment. I am not the perfect mom but I am doing my best to experience everything with them.

I am also a nurse. However, I am not practicing the profession. I taught ESL (English As A Second Language) in 2008. My primary students were Koreans. I have to say, teaching English was so much fun. Now, I am teaching group of kids in Sunday School Ministry. My students are very dear to me and I love seeing them grow each week.

My Kids
I have two kids at home. My daughter is 4 and my son is turning 3 this week. It is so amazing how fast they grow. I can still remember the time when my husband and I are still thinking of baby names and now they are so big. How time flies...

My daughter's name is Savine. She can now write her own name, sing different songs and dance ballet. She is going to school this year. We are all excited.

My son's name is Zach. If you are familiar with the Alphabet Pals, you must be familiar with Amy and Zac. Anyway, my son can now sing ABCs with sign language. He can also name words that begin with the alphabet letters like A for Apple, B for Ball.

I have the Lord to thank, for giving me such a wonderful family and amazingly gifted kids. My kids inspire me life and they are very important to me.

Parents And Child's Learning And Development

Every child is unique in his or her own special way. Children differ in color and race. Each child has different set of finger prints. Even if they are twins! They also learn and develop at different speed and pace. It is true that they go through the same order of development. However, each child differs on the length of time they spend on each development stage.

Parents are very important and they play special roles in child's learning and development. Parents are considered as the child's first teachers. They are the ones who should introduce the child into the world in the most creative and educational way. Since parents are considered as teachers, parents should expose their children to age appropriate challenges to help children experience and to explore the world. Parents can show their children new places through pictures or by exposing them to the environment. There are many ways parents can teach their children by use of visual aids, pretend games and other instructive resources that can be found online.
